The Beginning
Will You Believe In Me?
The rest of the week went by fairly quickly, and throughout the week I had been avoiding Austin which had not been easy. I lean back in my chair, at Juilliard's cafeteria, trying to clear my head and find a way to teach myself some guitar chords. A big showcase was coming up on Christmas and I really wanted to perform in the city at Times Square.
"Careful, Sophia, you don't want to fall." Austin's voice drifts from behind me; now pushing my shoulders down so the chair is completely on the floor.
"Go away." I answer firmly.
"Okay, what's wrong with you?" Austin asks, taking the seat in front of me.
"Nothing, I just want to work on my ideas for the Christmas showcase." I respond, which isn't a complete lie.
"No, you're lying. You've been avoiding me all week!" Austin whines.
"I've been busy all week." I point out.
"Sophia, you ran when I waved to you in the hallway yesterday." he sighs.
"Oh, is that what gave it away?" I ask sarcastically.
"Are you going to tell me?" Austin pushes, leaning in to look at me.
"I just don't want to get involves with a druggie." I answer honestly.
Austin looks at me like I've gone mad, "A druggie? Whose doing drugs?"
"You." I accuse rolling my eyes, "Why am I explaining you're issues to you?"
"I don't do drugs." Austin informs firmly.
I stare into his chocolate brown eyes, that stare back and somewhat melt my insides. I let out a long sigh and close my eyes.
"I heard you." I say.
"Heard me do drugs? Is someone telling you these things, because they're not true." Austin frowns.
"No, when I found you after we got pizza I heard you tell the guy in the hoodie that you didn't have the money to pay him for the drugs he sold you." I explain, peering at him curiously.
"Oh! No no, you misunderstood. I don't do drugs, he wanted me to get him some prescription medication and I borrowed some money to get it but I never gave him back the change." Austin explains, laughing nervously.
"Really?" I ask, not buying into his story.
"I promise, I mean, do I look like a druggie?" he laughs.
I eyes Austin's appearance, taking note of all the tattoos he has and then his clothing choice. True, Austin looked great in black skinny jeans, a Metallica hoodie and a pair of Vans, but I decide to push away his last comment and not answer him.
"Anyway," Austin starts, "how was your first week? Seeing that you were in fact avoiding me."
"Fine, actually, a bit more stressful, trying to get settled, but I'm sure that by next week I'll know the deal." I answer.
"Would you like to go out tonight?" Austin asks suddenly, "Just to grab dinner," he adds.
"I might have plans with Kat." I respond checking my phone.
"Oh, well maybe some other time." he offers.
"Sure, but I should probably go. I told Kat I'd meet her at the dorms." I say standing up and pushing in my chair.
"Yeah, I gotta run too. Talk to you later yeah?" Austin says.
"Alright." I agree, and start walking away.
"Sophia! Wait!" he calls out.
"Yes?" I ask, facing him again.
"I didn't give you my number." he says, handing me a piece of paper.
"Do you always have you're number already written down on paper or...?" I trail off staring at the folded piece in his hands.
"Ha, but no, I wrote it down while you were walking away." he laughs, and I take the paper.
"Alrighty then, see you later." I laugh back finally leaving the cafeteria.
I type in the phone number into my Contacts, a smile creeping onto my face as I walk to the dorms.
