Doctors

I looked at my phone with a roll of my eyes. Austin was now fifteen minutes late to my doctor’s appointment. Sighing I continued tapping my foot on the ground, hoping that he would get here. A few minutes later, he came jogging in through the automatic doors trying his best not to giggle as he plopped down in the seat next to me.

“Where the hell were you?” I asked giving him a glare.

“I’m sorry! I overslept!” He said with a smile. “You’re cute when you’re mad though…” He leaned over trying to kiss me as I moved further and further away from him.

“Raegan Jones?” I stood up quickly rolling my eyes at Austin who was giggling as he stood up and followed us back to the examination room.

“Stop!” I whispered to him with a giggle of my own, hardly believing he was acting this way. The nurse let us into the room where I hoped up on the tissue paper covered table.

“Who are you?” She said turning to Austin.

“Oh, I’m Austin! I’m the boyfriendish type, dude.” He said awkwardly giggling the whole time.

“Nice to meet you, Austin…” The nurse said with a giggle of her own. “You can sit in that chair.”

The nurse checked my eyes, ears, and blood pressure before smiling and reassuring me that the doctor would see me soon.

“Are they going to like look inside you?” Austin asked as soon as the door closed.

“Stop it!” I said horrified.

“I’m just asking!”

“I’m going to kill you! What got into you this morning?” I said shaking my head and crossing my arms over my chest.

“I’m just wondering!” He said laughing.

“You haven’t told anyone have you?”

“No!”

The door opened and the doctor came in, “Miss Raegan Jones, correct?”

“Yes,” I smiled.

“Hello, I’m Dr. Whitcomb. It’s nice to meet you.”

“You too.” I said shaking her hand as she flipped through my charts.

“So, what brings you in here today?” She asked smiling. “Possible pregnancy?”

“Yeah…” I said nodding my head and feeling really anxious.

“What’s been going on?”

“Well, I’m about a month late on my period…” I explained. “I started feeling really sick last week and
it just kind of clicked. So I bought an in home test and it was positive.”

“And did you only take the one test?”

“Yes.”

“And when was the last time you had intercourse?”

“April 6.” Austin answered causing us both to turn and look at him.

“I hope it was with this guy…” Dr. Whitcomb said causing him to laugh.

“Sorry, Rae. I did the math last night after you told me.” He admitted.

Shaking my head with a roll of my eyes.

“Okay, Miss Jones, I’m going to give you this cup. There’s a bathroom out in the hall. Please collect a urine sample for me.”

Austin started giggling again in the corner.

“What is so funny?” I asked as I headed for the door.

“Nothing!” He said.

The doctor laughed as she led the way into the hallway. “He’s being a typical guy. Don’t worry. They all get nervous over this stuff.”

Nodding my head, I did my business in the bathroom before going back into the exam room. Austin had made himself comfortable, completely stretched out on the chair looking through his phone.

“You never told me what happened in court.” I said as I slid myself back up onto the table.

“That’s ‘cause you weren’t talking to me.” He said with a smirk

“You’re such an asshole today!” I laughed.

“I’m just kidding with you!” He said taking a picture of me.

“Austin! Don’t you dare put that on the internet! Remember, you promised not to tell anyone about this.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah…” He said looking up at me as he slid his phone back into his pocket. “Um, I basically have some fines to pay and some community service.”

“How’d you get away with that?”

“A badass lawyer.” He said wiggling his eyebrows and putting his sunglasses over his eyes.

It wasn’t long before the doctor came back into the room.

“Okay,” She said smiling. “It looks like we have a baby!”

“Really?” I said slowly as it hit me how real it all was.

“And it looks as though his calculations were correct. You’re about seven weeks along. I’m going to assume you’re the father?” She said turning to Austin.

“Uh, yeah…” He said with a huge smile on his face and I could tell how proud he was hearing those words.

“I just need some basic information from you, then dad.”

Austin’s face got a little red when she called him that. But he happily told her his name, age, and the other health information she wanted.

“What’s this?” She asked tracing a line down her chest as a gesture to where his scar is. “Did you have some sort of surgery?”

“Uh, yeah…” He said looking down at his chest and pulling his shirt a bit so she could see it better. “I had heart surgery almost three years ago. I had to get an artificial aorta valve.”

“Why?” She asked.

“Marfan Syndrome…” He said sitting back in his chair.

She quickly jotted the information down in her records. “Now, the two of you do realize that this child has a 50% chance of being born with the disease?”

“Yeah,” I lied, nodding my head which caught Austin completely off guard. We had never talked about that information because we had never planned on having kids. “We definitely spoke about it.”

“Well, would like to have the baby down as Baby Jones or Baby Carlile?”

“Baby Carlile,” I said watching as Austin’s face lit up.

I made a follow up appointment for the next few weeks and followed Austin out of the hospital into
the bright California sunshine.

“Where’d you park?” He asked stretching.

“Down that way.” I said pointing.

“Good, me too.” He said with a smile as we walked towards our cars. “You hungry?”

“Yes!”

“Let’s get lunch. I’ll buy.”

“But my car…”

“We’ll come back for it, come on.”

I followed Austin to his car and climbed in the passenger side.

“Haven’t been in here in ages!” I said smiling over at him as he started the car and turned down Slipknot.

“I know!” He laughed as he back out. “Where do you want to eat?”

“I don’t care, it’s up to you.”

“Somewhere with good sushi!” He said with a smirk.

We soon arrived at one of Austin’s favorite restaurants in southern California. He ran ahead of me to open the door for me and placed a hand at the small of my back to help me through.

“Austin, I can handle it.” I laughed.

“I know, but…you know…” He said his eyes traveling to my stomach.

“I didn’t lose my ability to do things!”

“Not yet! You wait and eight months from no-“ I hit him in the stomach with a laugh before he could finish his sentence.

“So I was thinking…” Austin said as we both stood up from the table, adjusting ourselves before making our way out of the restaurant after eating. “When you’re comfortable with telling people, we should fly down to see my dad.”

“I’d love that!” I said smiling up at him.

“Really?” He asked. His hand slipped into mine absentmindedly as we strolled down the sidewalk towards the car.

“Yeah, Austin…I’d love to go see your dad and tell him in person. I think he’d like that too. Plus, you haven’t seen him in ages.”

“Good old Perry does miss me!” He said with a laugh.

“AUSTIN!” He both stopped and turned as a group of teenage girls came running up to him. I let go of

Austin’s hand and stepped to the side as quick as I could. So much for not telling people we were talking again.

“Here, go to the car.” He said tossing me the keys quickly. Catching them, I made my way to the car hoping none of the girls had seen me. I climbed in, starting it up, and blasting the AC. I turned and looked through the back window at the group that was surrounding Austin. He was always so adorable with his fans. He was hugging them, taking pictures with them, and signing things.

I had no problem with the attention he got from the girls. I knew that most of them were underage and I knew I could trust him. He was their hero. Who was I to deny them their chance of meeting him even if I sometimes got pushed to the side? I was happy for him. He was his happiest making other people happy. I could never take that from him.

And I was totally fine with people knowing about us, but in due time. I didn’t even know what we were, and the blogs were just quieting down about how I allegedly ripped his heart out and stomped on it. Last thing we needed was for anyone to get wind we were talking again and the rumors to fly. Our friends and family didn't even know we were talking yet or about the baby. We needed to focus on our faults and our child.

I stopped myself, only focusing on how strange that sounded. We had a child together.

The driver’s side opened a moment later and he slid into the car.

“Hey, babe!” He said smiling. “I don’t think they knew it was you! I just said you were a pretty girl who I took on a date.”

“Really, nice…” I said rolling my eyes with a giggle.

“It’s not entirely false!”

“Bring me to my car, Carlile. I have to go to work.”

“Yes, ma’am!”
