#28 Do Something Good
I bit my lip hard until I drew blood. I swallowed it and gathered the courage to press the call button on my phone. I did it and held my phone up to my ear. I waited anxiously for someone to pick up. "Hello, Through Branches Gift Store. Helen speaking, how may I help you?" came my managers voice.
"Hi, it's Kayleigh,"
"Oh, okay," she said flatly.
"I know I'm not your favourite person now. But I'm calling to fill you in,"
"What do you mean?"
"I'm not coming back, Helen. I've got another job,"
"You can't just leave me in it like this, Kayleigh,"
"I never signed a contract. And I'm doing something I actually like,"
"And this new job is better paying than here?" she demanded.
"Not right away. But it will be,"
"Kayleigh," she sighed deeply.
"I'm sorry," I muttered and hung up. I clicked to send a text. I typed the words, 'I've done it' and pressed send. Tony came to sit next to me and I leant against him. "I did it," I muttered.
"Good," he smiled.
"I'm jobless," I said. I got a text and looked at it. It was from Abby, my college friend and new business partner. 'Great. Everything will be ready for us by the time you arrive back to S.D.'.
"Looks like you have a job now," Tony told me and nudged me.
"Yeah," I laughed.
"We passed on your number to Kevin from Warped. He's going to call you once you're back home,"
"Thanks," I grinned.
"We want this to work out, you know,"
"Even Mike?"
"You know it's you who's avoiding him. He wants to talk and make up and marry you because you apparently proposed," Tony explained.
"I know," I sighed.
"Just talk to him,"
"Does he know I like him?"
"He doesn't know why, and he wants to,"
"I don't know if he likes me," I told him.
"That's why you need to talk,"
"I don't know how to ask him,"
"Just ask. Trust me,"
"Thanks turtle," I replied. I went forward and he opened his arms for me to hug him. Jaime walked out of the bathroom and saw us. He grinned and came over. I felt him wrap his arms around both Tony and I, joining our hug.
"This is nice," Jaime commented.
"Jaime likes hugs," I said.
"It makes him feel special," Tony added.
"I pity Jess," I muttered quietly. Jaime pulled away and sat down. We all broke away and sat back.
"What's on the books today?"
"You mean cards?" Tony asked.
"No, cards are boring," he replied and I rolled my eyes.
"Actually nothing. I only have one thing I wanted to do today from the list," I explained.
"Which was?" Jaime asked.
"Do something good. I have. I have my new job lined up, that's good for me and good for the people I'll be helping," I said, breaking out into a smile.
