Where You Slept A Thousand Nights Alone

You Should Have Left Me

I looked out at the ocean, washing the waves crash onto the earth, attacking the shores. This was it. This was where I was going to die. Whether it was today, tomorrow, or in fifty years. I would die in a place I loved, and I was determined it would happen. And today was the day I wanted it to happen. I've tried before, but it's never succeeded. Something always brought me back up to the surface. I didn't want that to happen this time though.

I took off my shirt and shorts, laying them with my beach towel. I took a deep breath, and let my tears run out one last time. I looked out at the waves, big enough to take me. My feet automatically started taking me to the water, as if my body knew I wanted this to happen, and it was granting my wish. Honestly, my life has been sucky, so I guess this meant nothing.

The water brushed over my feet, and for a second, I hesitated, like I wanted to go back. But I kept going. I looked down at the dark water, up to my waist now. Then, I dove under.

*ALAN*

I peered out at the water. It was so beautiful, with little people invading it. But one girl, was different from the others. She was slow, gracefully making her way into the water. I watched her, back turned towards me so she couldn't notice. I watched as she hesitated as the water touched her, causing hairs to stick up on her.

She was up to her waist, when she went under. I thought it was nothing, but when she didn't come up for twenty seconds now, I panicked. I told the guys I'd be right back.

I ran as fast as I could towards the water, crashing into it. I searched around the murky waters, looking for any sight of that bright red hair that flowed down her back when I'd seen her. I dove under the water, hoping to feel for an arm or a leg. I ran out of breath and rose back up. That's when I saw scarlet red coloring the water about twenty feet out away from me. I quickly ran and swam to it, hoping it was hair, and not blood.

I reached the color and reached under, feeling my arms instantly wrap around the waist of the girl's body. I pulled it up to find her face, choking and spitting up the salty water. She opened her eyes wide to reveal piercing blue eyes staring at me. I quickly pulled her along, making my way toward the sand. She tried fighting at first, but gave up about half way to the shore.

As we made it where it was up to our knees, I wrapped my arm around her shoulder to guide her. We quickly made it up to where the water didn't reach the sand, and I collapsed on the ground, her landing next to me.

"What were you thinking?" I asked, sounding worried.

"You should have left me out there." She responded.

*CHELSEA*

"You should have just left me out there." I answered, angrily. But part of me was relieved. Relieved that someone cared enough that they came out and rescued me from practically drowning myself.

"I couldn't let you drown." He responded, heaving, tired from tugging along my body through the water.

"You could have let me. I wanted it." I confessed. He stared at me, eyes wide. He let out a breath, sighing.

"I wasn't going to let you take your life, okay?" He sternly told me, although part of him didn't want to be to harsh sounding. I couldn't respond, I was just thankful someone saved me.

"Alan! What are you doing?" I heard a voice yell from behind us. I looked up to find four other guys behind us, looking down at me.

"She-" He started.

"He saved my life." I responded before he could. I explained to them what I had tried to do, trusting these complete strangers like an idiot. I felt like I could though, there was something about all of them that made them trustworthy.

"I really should get going, now." I told them, watching the sun set. I was about to leave and pack up before one of them stopped me.

"Wait, what's your name? And can I get your number maybe, I want to talk to you more." I turned to see it was the same one who had saved me.

"My name's Chelsea Sea. And I guess I'll give you my number." I responded, scribbling it down on a piece of paper and handing it to him. He quickly thanked me and ran back to his friends, who were now also leaving.

"Wait! What's your name!" I shouted, remembering someone had mentioned it earlier. I knew it started with an A, but I just couldn't put my finger on it.

"Alan!" He shouted back. I smiled and made my way to my car that was parked in the lot. I drove home, hoping he would text me. I told myself what happened today was going to change my life, and I wouldn't do it ever again.
