California Dreamer

chapter one

“Fuck” I muttered as I stumbled on the curb. I looked around me trying to figure out where the hell I was. I didn’t recognize any of the street names, then again I was well over two-thousand miles away from home so that was expected. I let out a huge sigh and flung my arms up, I was completely and utterly lost.
“You lost?”
I turned around to see a very tall, lanky guy with brown hair standing behind me. I noticed he was covered in tattoos, I looked up and he had this huge, almost cheesy grin on his face. Damn, why was he so happy?
I let out a little laugh. “Is it that obvious?”
“A little bit,” he said with a laugh. “Where are you headed?” he asked a little more serious.
I paused. Here I was lost in California with a complete stranger standing next to me asking me where I was going. Could I trust him? I looked at him, thankful I hadn’t taken my huge sunglasses off and just fucking looked at him. He was fucking tall, I was 5’9 and yet he still towered over me. His hair was a dark brown color from what I could tell through my glasses with half of it was buzzed real short and the other flowing off to the side, it was rather cute in an odd way. I traveled lower and saw his chest, fuck, what seemed like hundreds of tattoos were peeking out from his loose tank, across his chest, down his sides. He had a sleeve of them along his right arm and what looked like the start of another sleeve on his left. He was really skinny for a guy, wearing black skinny jeans and black converse. Damn, he was fucking gorgeous.
“Um,” I muttered, hoping I hadn’t taken too long staring at him. He definitely seemed like a local and I was lost anyways so it wasn’t like it would do any harm accepting his offer. I read off the address of the apartment building I was looking for.
“Ah,” he said and smiled again. Geez, I had never met someone who just seemed so generally happy all the time. “You’re pretty close actually; it’s a couple of blocks this way. He pointed down the road. “I can take you there.” He started walking away before I could protest.
“Um, thank you,” I said, skipping to catch up to him.
“No problem. So where you from and what brings you to LA?” he questioned and looked down at me.
“Just outside of Chicago actually-,”
“No way, I love Chicago!,” he quipped in, cutting me off.
I laughed a little before continuing. “And I’m here on vacation actually. A present for myself I guess.”
He smiled. “Well California is definitely the best place to come for vacation. Seems like you’re looking to make your stay a little more permanent though.” He said as we came up on the apartment building.
“Yeah, maybe,” I said and shrugged. “It’s kind of been a dream of mine, for a while now, and I’m just doing it for fun mostly. I don’t think I would ever be able to actually move out here.” I shrugged.
Damn, what was I doing? I had known this man for what, five minutes, and I had already told him one of my best kept secrets? My family didn’t even know I was thinking about moving, fuck my sister didn’t even know and she was here with me, currently gets her nails done, and I just fucking blurted it out to him, a stranger. I didn’t even know his name.
He stopped in front of the tall glass doors. “Well, I think if it really is a dream of yours, you could find a way to make it work.” He shrugged and ran a hand through his hair.
I sighed and reached up to take my sunglasses off, squinting into the sunlight. “It’s not that easy,” I said placing my sunglasses into the crook of my shirt, resting them against my chest. I looked up into his eyes, a rich chocolate brown, and noticed he was staring down at me, our eyes locked and a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
“What?” I asked suddenly self-conscious. Knowing my luck I probably had a horrible sun burn on my face and a weird outline from my sunglasses making me look ridiculous.
He let out a small laugh and shifted on his feet, was he embarrassed? “Sorry,” he said and looked at me again, “it’s just, you have really pretty eyes.” He laughed again and shook his head. He was embarrassed. Geez what was happening here?
“Oh, thank you.” I said and smiled. It was a compliment I got often actually. To most people my eyes would seem like a normal hazel but once you got close enough and if the lighting was right, they took on this almost gold color, with flecks of green and brown, something I got from my Dad. I considered them my best feature actually.
There was a silence between us, surprisingly not even an awkward one, and he was just staring at me when suddenly there was a dinging noise and I saw him reach into his pocket, pulling out an iPhone.
“Well, thank you for showing me the way,” I said quickly. “I can take it from here.” I rang the service bell on the side of the door and spoke into the speaker saying I was here to look at the apartment for rent and I heard the door buzz as it unlocked. I grabbed the handle and pulled the door open when I heard him speak again.
“Hey, actually, is it cool if I come with? I know it’s weird but I always wondered what one of these rooms would look like.”
I stopped. I was shocked I looked at him again and he had that cheesy smile on his face. Who was this guy? I mean, fuck, why didn’t these types of things happen to me back home? Once again I contemplated letting this guy help me. I still knew nothing about him but I don’t know, there was just something about him, something that made me feel safe, as weird as that sounded. He honestly looked like a giant kid with that smile on his face and I just had this overwhelming urge to know why he was so fucking happy. No one can be that damn happy all the time.
“Uh, sure,” I said, surprising myself, what on earth was I doing?
“Sweet. Thanks,” he said and flung his arm up over my head to grab the door from me and pull it open. “I’m Austin, by the way.”
“Lulu,” I said as I breezed through the door.
“Well nice to meet you Lulu,” he smiled and we headed up the stairs.
