Anyone Else But You

Four

It had been a couple of days since I’d seen Austin at the restaurant, and I wish I’d seen him again since I’d been there. But I’d had to see Jen, and sort out a couple of last minute things with the director before I flew back to New York that evening. But I had a couple of hours left before I flew back, so I decided to swallow my pride, and texted Austin.

“Hey, I was wondering if you wanted to meet up or something later. I leave for New York tonight, but I’ve got a couple of hours free.”

Who was I kidding? Why would someone like him want to meet up with someone like me, especially when I was leaving this evening? I sent it anyways, and tried not to wait on a reply. I got off the bed I was sitting on in my room, and decided to take a shower, leaving my phone outside on the bed. I took a short shower, and came out just wrapped in a towel, to see my mobile ringing.

I picked it up eagerly.

“Hello?”

“Hey! You wanted to meet up?”
came Austin’s voice from the other end of the phone. I breathed a small sigh of relief.

“Yeah! Where do you wanna go?” I replied.

“Well I can just come pick you up from your hotel if you wanted to, and we can go from there?”
he suggested.

“Sounds awesome! What time will you be here?”

“Ten minutes ok?”

“Yeah, cool, just come up to my room when you’re here. It’s number 503.”

“Awesome. See you in a bit Em.”

“Bye Austin.”

I hung up, and suddenly realised that I was still wrapped in a towel, hair dripping wet and no makeup. Challenge accepted as they say.

Within 10 minutes, I had dried my hair, put on a tiny bit of makeup, and I was fully clothed. It was pretty good if you ask me. And just as I finished applying my eyeliner, there was a knock on the door.

“One sec!” I shouted out towards it, touching up my makeup, before making my way to the door and pulling it open. Austin was stood there wearing a black button down shirt and some skinny jeans. He looked really good and his crooked grin was plastered on his face again.

“You wanted to go somewhere my lady?” he held his arm out for me, and I hooked mine through his, laughing at his cheesiness as we made our way out to his car parked out front.

He opened the passenger door for me, and I climbed in as he made his way round to the driver’s side.

“So, where does the princess want to go?” he questioned once he’d started the car up.

“I hadn’t really thought about that,” I admitted.

“How about the beach?” he suggested with that infectious grin again.

“That sounds perfect,” I smiled up at him as he pulled the car out onto the road and in the direction of the beach.

10 minutes later, we were sat on the sand in a comfortable silence.

“I wanted to thank you, by the way,” I spoke up; he looked down at me, completely confused.

“Thank me? For what?” he asked curiously.

“For helping me come up with some inspiration, I’ve written a good chunk of the motifs for the score. Thank you.”

“It was no problem, sometimes you just need that extra nudge in the right direction,” he smiled down at me, and yet again I couldn’t help but grin back.

“What time’s your flight tonight?”

“I need to be at the airport at 7.”

“Why don’t you just stay here and write the score?” he suddenly questioned, and I couldn’t help but be taken aback a little by his forwardness.

“I have responsibilities back home Austin. Not just writing a score, my sister’s at my apartment as we speak, I have stuff I have to take care of,” I sighed, because I really didn’t want to go back, although I missed Jonah more than anything.

“Can’t your sister just take care of it for you?” he asked.

“Unfortunately not, it’s a little bigger than just feeding a cat.”

“I just don’t want you to go back yet, I feel like we’re just getting started. Is that too weird or cheesy?” he looked into my eyes, searching for the answer.

“It’s a little weird, seen as I’ve only known you for about a week,” and I saw his face fall slightly, “but I understand you. I don’t want to go back, because I’m afraid I’ll never see you again,” I whispered the last part.

“I’ll see you again Emma. I won’t take no for an answer,” and I had to laugh at him, he was kinda adorable.

We fell back into silence, when I felt my phone go off in my pocket.

“Hello?” I answered, picking it up.

“Tia!”

“Hey Jonah!” I answered, Tia was his nickname for me. I was suddenly aware that Austin was sat right there and I wasn’t ready for him to hear about Jonah, so I got up and gave him a one minute sign, before walking further away.

“I can’t wait for you to come home, Auntie Anna won’t let me have another cookie!” he whined down the phone to me.

“That’s because Auntie Anna doesn’t want your teeth to all rot,” I teased him, “look baby, I’ve gotta go, but I’ll see you in the morning alright? I love you.”

“Bye, see you ‘omorrow,” he chirped down the phone.

“Bye sweetie,” I replied before hanging up, and walking back over to Austin.

“That sounded like responsibility calling,” Austin remarked, and I could tell he was questioning who it was that I was talking to.

“Yeah, it was,” I replied, “look I should get back to the hotel, I need start packing. I don’t wanna miss my flight.”

I knew I sounded like I was brushing him off, but I wasn’t; I just didn’t want him to question it any further, it wasn’t something I wanted to get into yet.
