Tell Us That It's Different Now, You're Up To No Good

Jessica

I woke up the next morning, feeling refreshed and ready to start the new day. Classes started in a few days, and I still had to buy all my books and decide if I was going to major in something. What, I had no clue. Jenna was still sleeping peacefully as I got dressed and went downstairs to find the cafeteria. I assembled a breakfast of toast and jam before having a seat in the mostly empty room. I saw Vic and Erin at one of the tables with a few other what I presumed were seniors, and Alan and a heavily tanned male with long brown hair walking into the joint. They loaded up their own trays with food and Alan, spotting me, hurried over. I blinked at Alan as he sat down. Why would he come over here?

'Hi Alan.' I said politely, giving him a warm smile that didn't reach my eyes. His friend glanced between us uncertainly.

'Hi Jessica.' Alan smiled grimly back. 'Jessica, this is my roommate Phil. Phil, this is Jessica,' he paused almost unnoticeably before continuing, 'an old friend.'

'Nice to meet you, Phil.' I said, shaking his outstretched hand. 'And we're not friends. Not even old. He dated my best friend and she now has trust issues.' I stated bluntly, letting my inner bitch shine through. He had to know what he was getting into and who Alan really was.,
But in reality, I only tacked on, 'We're not that old of friends, Alan. We only really met each other senior year.'

'It feels like forever though.' Alan smiled.

'What are you majoring in?' Phil asked, diffusing the subtle tension that had arisen between us.

'Undecided. What about you two?' I went back to my toast, wishing I had gotten a drink of juice too.

'Undecided.' Phil said, grinning.

'Bio chemistry as a major and I'm minoring in music, obviously.'

'I think Diana's a music major. Or literature. I'm not sure.' I said smoothly, trying to cause Alan as much discomfort as possible. Once again, Phil cut in before Alan could answer.

'I don't know why you'd want to major in English. Isn't it doing the same thing we've done for the past six years? Reading and analyzing books?' Phil started eating his cereal, the loud crunch following his words.

'Yeah, maybe. I have no interest in literature though.' I went back to my toast, and yet another silence ensued. I got up as soon as I had finished breakfast, giving the guys a quick wave. I walked back out into the sunshine, heading for the dorm. I was going to see if Diana wanted to do anything today, or I was going to buy my books by myself. She had to get up, at the very least. As I did, a familiar-looking lanky male almost bumped into me.

'Andy,' I said, blinking to rid myself of the small daydream that had distorted my vision.

'Are we still up for tonight?' He asked, hands on my shoulders, steadying me. I looked up at Andy, his infectious grin overcoming his face as he looked down at me.

'Of course.'

'See you, then!' Andy checked to make sure I wasn't about to collapse and then went off on his own. I entered the dorm and went upstairs, first to my room to check Jenna was up as it was nearly nine and, seeing she was, went over to Diana's.

I knocked on her door, and her roommate opened it up.

'Hi, I'm Jessica -' I started before the brunette cut me off.

'Yeah, yeah. Diana said you might be over.' She put a hand up and then turned to the room. 'Diana!' She turned back to me. 'I'm Tay, by the way. Well, Taylor, but I prefer Tay.' I nodded. This girl talked even more than me. Tay sighed, turning back to her room. 'Diana!'

Diana stumbled to the door, one eye shut and her hair piled on her head, in an incredibly messy bun. She had on a loose, knitted, boat neck jumper, which had slipped to the side and was showing her shoulder and black bra strap. Track suit pants covered her lower half and she groaned at me. 'Really?' She said, turning around and motioning with her hand for me to come inside. Jenna sighed and shut the door behind me, crossing her arms and shifting all her weight to one foot as we watched Diana retrieve her clothes.

'Is she always this grumpy in the morning?' Tay asked, looking up at me. Tay was clearly dressed, in khaki shorts and a white button up with no sleeves. She was barefoot though, and her hair was tumbling down her shoulders.

'Not usually.'

'Oh, good. I was almost ready to throttle her this morning. She wouldn't even contemplate getting up.' Tay said bluntly. 'I'm starving, so I'm off to eat.' She turned, opened the door and was gone. I stared at Diana with a disdainful look on my face, which she ignored.

'Do you mind? I'm getting dressed here.' I shook my head with the hint of a smile on my face.

This story is on an indefinite hiatus. I have no motivation or inspiration for it anymore. I'll write it when I write it. My muse is gone.
