The Fine Art of Making it Out Alive

Oli P.O.V

I couldn’t fight the urge to grimace as the words escaped my lips, welcome home; this was certainly not what I had wanted to come home too. I pivoted around to catch Austin’s eyes, they were full of malice and rage, and I don’t blame him. Someone was breaking into his house, and mentally torturing him, even though I lived here too…it was his home, not mine. I paraded over to him, tossing the greeting card to the table; I wrapped my arms around his neck and buried my face in his shoulder.

“Do you want to call the police?” I asked nonchalantly, I felt him sigh before wrapping his arms securely around my waist; the feeling of butterflies from his touch was becoming less weird and more comfortable. I was slowly coming to terms with myself, I was developing a crush on the slightly taller man, whether I thought it was normal or not.

“We are going to eat then run to the store and get new locks for all the doors and windows, it’s going to cost a fortune but I want to at least do that much before we run to the police. Maybe I will buy a gun or something, I don’t know…” he exasperated the last sentence, his voice was shaky and tired but he didn’t let his valor sway. I nodded into his shoulder and squeezed him a bit tighter, earning a chuckle from him.

“Someone’s awfully cuddly today!” he made out in between giggles, “Not that I mind!” I felt like the hot room was 1000 degrees hotter as my face turned what I presume to be, an awful shade of red. I turned my head a bit to make eye contact with Austin and his face instantly warmed up.

‘It’sbecausehe’sembarrasedtobehuggingyouOli.’

All thoughts pushed aside, He smiled at me and did something that made my heart climb into my throat, as soon as the small kiss he planted on my forehead had began it was over. Way too soon, might I add. I smiled at him, as his face looked unsure of how my reaction was; I released him from my death grip and held my hand out to him, he grinned before slipping his fingers in between mine. We made our way to the kitchen space, and separated as I opened the pantry, and him the fridge.

“What about steak?” he asked, holding up the black wrapped meat.

I laughed, “Uhm I don’t think you noticed, but I’m a vegetarian…”

The look on his face resembled embarrassment, he bit his lip harshly, as he threw the package on the counter, then I heard his all too familiar laugh.

“Well I will have steak, what would you like? I’ve got stuff for salads, and I may have some boca burgers!” he eyed me from his spot at the counter.

“Salad sounds nice, ill take a burger if you have it.” I winked at him, earning a heavy blush as he turned on his heel and muttered something along the lines of, “Ill see for ya”

After minutes of digging we found everything we had been looking for, steak, lettuce, dressing, and a meatless burger for myself. He ushered me to take a seat at the small island while he insisted on cooking everything himself. I tried to argue but his face told me it would be useless. I relaxed into my seat, as my companion began to throw food in the pans, and made my salad as the food was cooking.

“Ranch, blue cheese or...ranch?” he laughed in my direction, holding up two bottles.

“Ranch, please.”

He nodded his head and doctored up my salad, then presented it to me. It looked…amazing. I glanced at him as he motioned for me to try it, I obeyed; and took the first bite, and ill be a damn liar if I didn’t say it was the best salad I had ever had.

“Wow, that’s delicious! How do you even make a salad that good?” I asked curiously, as I shoveled more of the lettuce into my mouth. He beamed, before shrugging, “Talent?” I raised an eyebrow, before we both giggled.

After 15 minutes or so, we were both sitting at the island enjoying our food. Everything was delicious, and I made sure to let him know that. We spent the rest of the meal eating in a comfortable silence, as soon as we finished I made a move to clean the plates and pans, before he could. He sighed but didn’t intervene, after getting all the dishes in the sink, I turned the water on and had to fight the urge to scream. From the faucet was not water, but something that looked and smelled a lot like blood. Blood, fucking blood was coming from the sink. I must have made some sort of noise of shock, because Austin was soon beside me and eying the sink much like myself.

He grunted and shut the ‘water’ faucet off, and spun me around into his arms. I relaxed in to his embrace and buried my face into the crook of his neck; I hadn’t even realized I was shaking something fierce. He held me close for several minutes, “Oli we should go get this stuff, and I am defiantly buying a gun now. This isn’t remotely funny, and with what happened the other day when you were asle-“

I untangled myself from his grasp and shot him a confused look, he hadn’t told me anything had happened when I was asleep! A shiver shook through me.

“What happened?” I dead panned, agitation kicking in; why am I just now hearing about this? He sighed clearly uncomfortable with the situation,

“Nothing worth repeating Ols.” He tried to brush the subject off, but I wasn’t about to let that happen.

‘justgoaheadandkillhimwhilehisbackisturned.’

Ignoring that, I grabbed his arm and spun him around; I must have looked angry because his eyes widened drastically.

“Tell me. Now.” My voice was harsh; it even surprised myself at how deep it sounded. He frowned and reached out for me, I reluctantly put myself in his arms for the billionth time today, not that I was complaining, I liked being close to him.

“Well when I was making food, I heard the mail slot open and close. So I went to check it and it was an envelope with just my name on it. So I went to open it, and I got cut so I dropped it…I thought it was just a paper cut at first, but as I went to pick it up from the floor, I got cut again. Well I finally opened it and there were Razor blades in the corners! Like Razors, and there was a note inside…it said ‘Goodmorning.’ That was all.”

I listened intently to him as his voice shook; I pulled my head up to look him in the eye.

“Why didn’t you tell me Austin?” he bit his lip and shrugged, before looking down.

“I didn’t want you to get worried is all, because I thought if this kept up you would just have your friend come get you…and…I-I don’t want you to leave.” As He admitted this, I felt my face heat up; as I let his words sink in. He wanted me to stay here with him? He thought I would actually leave him behind? I put a hand on his cheek and made his eyes meet mine, they looked…glassy, like he was fighting tears.

“I am so sorry Oli, I know you didn’t sign up for this shit when you agreed to come here, and Look at me being selfish, asking you not to leave…this shit is scary Ols, I don’t blame you if you want to leave, I will pay for you to fly to your friends or whatnot…” I shook my head.

“For starters I don’t want to leave, and I never will as long as you want me here. For second, I may not have ‘Signed up for this shit’” I threw a hand up in mock quotations, “but, we got into this mess together, and that’s how we will get outta this, ‘kay? I am not going to leave you behind Austin, you mean to fucking much to me.” He smiled brightly at me, before pulling me even closer than we already were, he kissed my head and thanked me over and over again, and I laughed at his actions.

“C’mon mate! We gotta go to the store, ‘member?” He halted his assault on my forehead and blushed, ‘awe’.

“You’re right let’s go!” He let go of me, but his hand soon found mine, I held it contently. He grabbed his keys, and locked the door, which was proving to be useless. We made our way to the car, releasing hands as we took our seats, his hand made its place to the gear shift after we were on the road, at a stop light I heard him sigh. I looked at his face and was met with a pout; I tilted my head in confusion, before looking down to realize his hand was turned over, as if asking for me to hold it. I punched his shoulder causing him to laugh, but nonetheless, I slipped my palm into his and laced our fingers together. My skin felt like a fire was burning under it, and my stomach was trying to crawl into my chest, as his thumb drew circles into my hand. It was…nice.

We made it to some home goods store, where we waltzed down the isles, with a worker who helped us pick out the stuff we needed. Before we knew it, our total was an astronomical $632.36” my eyes went wide, and I shot a look at Austin. He sighed and pulled out a Debit card, handing it over. He squeezed my hand.

“Hey its okay, anything to keep you safe.” He winked at me and I felt my face heat up,the woman behind the counter handed Austin his card and receipt. Before finishing bagging up the locks, and smiling at us;

“Here you go sir, oh and You guys are very cute together by the way!”

I could see both of our faces flush, as we thanked her and walked out, Austin’s face was still maroon as we made it to the car. A blush on him…was adorable. Not everyday you see a grown man blush like a school girl; it was almost fitting on him though. I could defiantly get used to it.

We sat in the car, and made our way down roads I had yet to be on, I eagerly watched my surroundings, and nodded my head to the sound of Slipknot. We arrived at a dingy, gun shop and I eyed him curiously, he shrugged.

“I think it would be smart if we both get one…” he muttered, and as much as I didn’t like guns…I nodded in agreement. We entered the small shop, and our eyes were met with a gruff looking man, no younger than 45, who was huge to say the least. He towered over myself and even Austin, that fact alone made him intimidating. As the bell above the door chimed he glanced our way, “Evenin’ fella’s what can I do ya for?” his accent was thick and southern sounding, something I wasn’t used to in the least.

As Austin explained we had been through several break in’s and that we were looking for something to use in the worst case scenario the man smiled.

“Smart decision boys, sorry boutcha bout of bad luck!” he showed us around and we settled for 9mm pistols, common and easy to use according to our salesman, who kept mentioning how much he "loved my Australian Accent." I fought the urge to laugh. Finally, Austin and I walked to the counter, and he handed his card over to pay the $350 dollar total, he had spent almost a grand today, and acted like it was nothing! We filled out all the required paper work, which took forever. It was 10 by now, and The shop was closed, me and Austin only remained; yet our Salesman was just as friendly as ever, despite his appearance.

“Would ya boys like to try em out?” he asked politely, and Austin and I agreed, we followed him to the back room, which was a range, he handed us gear to put on and we suited up. The man left to get ammo, and Austin pulled me close to him.

“Lets take a picture! You can send it to your friend Matt” he smiled, oh shit; I had totally forgot to call Matt, I laughed and leaned in for a picture. I usually hated taking them, but this one came out so nicely; even though I looked like shit compared to the god that was Austin. He smiled brightly and hit a contact that I Assumed was Matt, and he handed me the phone. I typed out,

“Everything is going great; Austin and I are actually at a shooting range! I hope your doing well, I miss you mate! –Oli “

I hit send and Austin pocketed the device, just in time for our ‘instructor’ to walk in and explain everything to us.We got busy making sure we knew how to shoot, and shoot to kill that was, not to disable.

We made our way home and began to make hasty work of changing the locks once Austin showed me how to do it. By the time we had finished it was 1 am, and both of us were at the point of exhaustion, he collapsed into his bed and groaned loudly. I giggled,

“Well I have to take a shower, I will be back shortly!” I exited his room and grabbed clothes from mine and entered the bathroom. Making quick work of slipping my clothes off and stepping into the hot shower, letting the grime of today wash down the drain, I smiled into the warm water. Thankfully it was just the downstairs sink that had been tapped into, wouldn't want to take a shower in blood, ya know?

After washing up and stepping out, I dried off and slipped boxers, and a pair of black sweats on; I moved to grab my shirt but was halted by a loud grunt and a crash, that sounded similar to a body hitting the floor. I paled, and hurried to the door, swinging it open, grabbing my gun on the counter that was snuggled into its holster, I ran to Austin’s room. I don’t know what I was expecting, him to be dead or someone to have somehow gotten in again, but I was met with him crouched on the floor, his back leaning on the bed, and his hand gripping his chest. He was conscious, but barely. I knew he wasn’t even aware of my presence; I darted downstairs and went to grab his medicine. I opened the drawer where it was housed, but instead was met with a note. I grabbed it,

Looking for those pills? Sorry to tell you they are gone. Hope all is well.

I screamed in anger, as I slammed the drawer shut and made my way back upstairs, Austin hadn’t moved, thankfully.

I sat in front of him, and shook him gently, trying to snap him out of the pain. To no avail, he muttered something incoherent before slipping into unconsciousness. Panic racked my brain, and I fumbled around for his phone, ignoring the texts from Matt and one from Tino, I dialed 911.

“911, what’s your emergency?”

“My friend, I think he is having a heart attack! He has a heart condition, oh god please help him..” tears were pouring down my cheek as I cradled the small device to my ear.

“Where are you located?”

Shit I didn’t know the address.

“I don’t know! Its his house, uh shit!” I ran down the stairs and flung myself out the front door, eying the numbers.

“It’s 622, I don’t know the street name!”

“Sir we have located you, we will be there soon, please wait outside for the ambulance.”

“Hurry please.” I choked out between sobs.

Soon after I hung up, an ambulance, fire truck and police showed up, a little much for the situation but I didn’t care. I showed them to where Austin was, and they had him on a stretcher before I could blink, he was being put in the ambulance.

“Can I ride with him?” I asked hastily,

“Are you related to him?” the EMT asked

“He…he is my fiancé! Please let me go with him,” she believed the lie apparently because I soon found myself sitting in the back of the wailing ambulance, holding his cooling hand, as the paramedics muttered words I didn’t know the meaning of.

One with a clipboard turned to me, as the others cut his shirt off of him and worked on him,
“Please tell me as much as you can about him, it will help us a lot.”

“His name is Austin Carlile, he is 25, has Marfan’s Syndrome,” how I remembered that was beyond me, “he takes medicine for it, but there was no more…” I lied through my teeth.

“Do you know what it was called?” the EMT asked, I shook my head.

She asked more questions, and I tried to answer them as best as I could. We soon arrived to the hospital where he whisked into the back and I was left in the emergency room, I used his phone to call Tino, Aaron, Phil, and Alan, all whom said they would be there immediately. I called Matt finally, and didn’t even give him a chance to speak as the events of tonight and the last week poured from my lips.

I silently prayed to whomever, for Austin to be alright, as Matt tried his hardest to calm me down, with the arrival of Austin’s friends I told Matt I would call him later, much to his disdain. I watched as they entered the waiting room, and rushed over to me. Tino pulling me up from the chair I had been sobbing on, he whisked me into a hug and I was soon smothered by the gang as they tried to pry what had happened out of me. I decided to tell them everything, every little detail from the very beginning.

Tonight was going to be a very long night.
