An Addiction Out Of Style

Chapter 1

Tino, Phil, and I decided decided that we’d go to a free show downtown tonight when we couldn't think of anything else to do. The venue was small and we’d never heard of the band, so we didn't really know what to expect. I pulled the car into the lot across the street just as Phil had finished his blunt. It was a chilly night, so we were all wearing jeans, t-shirts, and jackets. We made our way into the venue, smiling the whole time. Phil and Tino were obviously stoned and for some reason, I was just happy. All of us made our way over to the bar and got out drinks before we joined the surprisingly large crowd. It was then that I noticed him. Diagonal from me, farther away, was a short red-head. I don’t know what about him caught my attention, but I continued to stare. “AUSTIN!” Tino shouted from right beside me. I jumped a bit and looked over at him with a confused expression. “What’s wrong with you? Phil’s been trying to talk to you for five minutes now.” “S-sorry,” I stuttered out. “Just got distracted, I guess.” Phil took a step forward and looked to where I had been staring. I glanced that way out of the corner of my eye and saw the guy turn around before I quickly looked away. Phil looked up at me, a smirk on his face and a knowing look in his eyes.
—————
Aaron had been nagging me for days now to go see this band with him but I’d been putting it off, he blew up my phone with messages and I kept giving him the same answer until he came to my house and literally dragged me to the bar, my hair was a mess and I hadn't even had time to grab a jacket. “Seriously, you’re gonna love this band, Alan!” He shouted as he pushed me into the car and moved around it to climb in himself. I, of course wasn't amused at all, I’d planned to have a night in by myself with Sophie and Tim Burton movies. I stayed quiet as he rambled on about this band. Honestly, Aaron never stops talking once he’s passionate about something. “Go get some drinks in.” He said with a wide smile. My eyes widened a little, why is he so excited? “Okay, is there anything you want in particular or shall I just get you a beer?” I asked. He nodded before driving off and parking the car as I made my way inside, assuming he wanted a beer. There were more people than I'd hoped there would've been. I walked to the bar and got our drinks before sitting at a table near the stage. I sipped at my beer and slowly stopped as I noticed a tall guy covered in tattoos staring directly at me, I stared back for a few moments before my awkwardness got the better of me and I looked back down. Thankfully, Aaron had finally decided to show his face again and sat down opposite me. “It took me ages to find a spot to park the car!” He shouted over the music. I nodded and mumbled a little as my eyes shot back to the guy. “I’m going to the toilet!” He shouted again as he shot up from the chair. I nodded, I wasn't really paying attention to anything Aaron was saying. I rested my chin on my hand as I sipped at my drink. ‘Why was he looking at me?’ I asked myself as I sunk down further into my seat.
——————
I stood in my place and looked back at Phil. His smirk was getting wider and Tino was now watching the two of us. I had to look away from them. Somehow, my eyes ended up on the ginger again. I was biting at my lip as I watched him sink into his seat and ignored Phil, who was now laughing. “What’s so funny?” Tino questioned him, clueless as to what was going on. “I think Austin found something interesting,” Phil continued to laugh. I kept my eyes trained on the guy and tried ignoring them. Finally, I had enough. I shot a glare back at the two of them before walking away. I walked towards him, but my nerves got the better of me. My feet stopped moving as I froze and my eyes looked back at Tino. What was I doing? Why did I keep having to stare at this stranger? I looked back to him to catch him looking at me before I dropped my eyes to the ground. Biting my lip harder, I pushed my hands into my pockets and silently cursed myself for agreeing to go out.
——————
I looked back up as I searched with my eyes for Aaron, I didn't succeed. I looked back over at him. He was with two friends, one was grinning wide and the other looked confused. I put my head back down to stop myself from staring until I realized my beer was gone already. I moved out of my seat and began to walk towards the bar before I saw him walking towards me, my mouth opened a little as I panicked and ended up dropping my empty bottle to the floor causing it to smash. “For fucks sake. Way to go, Alan.” I mumbled to myself as I kneeled down and picked the glass up carefully. I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks as I bit my lip, how embarrassing. I rubbed my cheeks a little in hope of cooling them down before I stood back up again.
——————
I heard the sound of breaking glass and looked over to the bar. The guy was picking up some glass before he stood back up. “It’s now or never, Austin,” I mumbled to myself quietly. I took a deep breath and kept my gaze on him. I moved slowly as I walked up behind him. “Uhm… Are you ok?” I asked from behind, putting out as much fake confidence as I could.
——————
I handed the broken glass to one of the waiters and put my elbows onto the bar and rubbed my face, my head shot up as I heard a soft voice behind me. I turned my head to see him standing there. “I.. Uh.. Yeah. Thank you. I’m just clumsy.” I stuttered out through nervous laughs and smiled a little as I sat down on one of the stools.
——————
I didn't hesitate to sit on the stool next to him and order two beers. When the bartender put them in front of me, I slid one over to the guy before I took a deep drink from mine. “I’m Austin,” I smiled over at him.
——————
I fidgeted around in my chair a little in an attempt to get comfortable before I heard him speak and he pushed a beer towards me. I looked down at it for a few seconds and smiled. “Thank you. And I’m Alan.” I kept my smile as I look up at him.
——————
I continued to smile at Alan for a few more moments before I took another drink of the beer in my hand. My eyes moved around the bar as I silently cursed myself again. I had no idea what to do now. I had no clue what to say. Alan was probably thinking that I’m an ass for just sitting here.
——————
I bounced my knee a little as I sipped at my beer, I needed to say something or he’d leave and I didn’t really want him to leave yet. “So.. Who are you here with?” I asked Austin as I gave him a small smile.
——————
“Oh… Uh…” I turned to look back a him. “My friends. Tino and Phil,” I pointed behind me. “How about you?”
——————
I looked over to where Austin was pointing and smiled a little. “Well, I was drug here by my friend Aaron he went to the toilet and I guess now he’s gone.” I shrugged.
——————
“Well, that’s not really cool,” I mumbled. I remained quiet for a few minutes before I looked back at Alan. “You can hang with me if you want,” I said nervously.
——————-
I kept my eyes on Austin as he spoke. “Uh, yeah.. That’d be great.” I said before taking another sip of my drink and smiled again while I looked over at Austin’s friends again.
——————-
“I’m going to be honest,” I sighed. “I really didn't want to come to this show. All I wanted to do was get drunk and have fun.”
I gulped as I looked back at Alan and I could feel my face getting hot. I was embarrassed to admit my real reasons for going out tonight to someone I had just met. Not just that. Someone who had found a way to capture my complete attention.
——————
“I just wanted to stay at home, drink beer and watch movies.” I laughed. “So were you forced to come out too then?” I asked as I looked into Austin’s eyes, I’m definitely sure I got lost in them because I couldn't focus on anything else in the room but him.
——————
“Uhm… Not really,” I laughed. “I just didn't want to be alone.”
I placed my arm down on the bar as I continued smiling at Alan, trying to keep myself calm.
——————
“Oh.. I’m sorry.” I felt kind of awkward, he didn’t seem like the type to be lonely I thought. I watched his body movements carefully as he put his arm on the counter and drank more.
——————
“For what?” I grinned. “I’m obviously not alone now.”
I watched him closely for a reaction. Any kind of reaction. I also used the time to look closer at him. Alan had chin length red hair, tattoos in multiple places, and a silver nose ring similar to my own.
——————
“Well yeah, that’s true.” I giggled with a small shrug and looked down at the floor as I felt Austin’s eyes on me and bounced my leg again while I poked my thumb into my bottle.
——————
“So… I guess the real question is whether we stay here and watch this band, which is probably shitty, or go find some real shit to do,” I shrugged as I looked away from Alan back to my beer.
——————
“I think the second suggestion sounds best.” I smiled as I look up and chugged down the rest of my beer.
