Just Breathe

tonight is alive

One week had gone by and Austin still had not contacted the cute red haired boy named Alan. The older boy was far too nervous and scared as to what contacting Alan could bring. His heart told him to call Alan, but his head told him that he could get hurt, and he had been hurt one too many times to ever trust his heart again. As much as the tall man wanted to, he could not seem to forget, or ever stop thinking about the younger man. And it wasn't just because Alan's name was located directly below Aaron-who was one of his best friend friends- in his phone, but because his heart simply wouldn't let go. Soon enough, the feelings in his heart started to invade his thoughts. He began thinking, 'Alan won't ever like me more than a friend. We can just be friends. I could always use more friends.'

And so, after a whole week, Austin unlocked his phone and mentally prepared himself to call Alan. Just as he was about to press call, Alan's name popped up on his screen and his phone started ringing. Austin just stared at his phone, confused. Austin hadn't given Alan his number. The orange kitten he now called Nala meowed and jumped onto Austin's lap. He hesitantly answered, bringing the phone to his ear.

"H-hello?"

Alan's voice was sounded through his speakers.

"Hey, I'm calling about the flyers for the kitten posted around town."

Austin blinked, looking down at the kitten he had grown to love in the short time he had her.

"O-oh. Y-yes I have h-her."

Austin could hear practically hear Alan's smile through his speakers.

"Awesome! Can I come pick her up today? At five thirty?"

Austin looked over at the clock. It was five.

"S-sure. I love o-on Ben J-Jordan. S-Shady Glade apartments, 1258."

"Okay! I'll see you then!"

Austin looked at his phone, then at Nala. She was a little chubbier than when he had first gotten her. She also sported a red collar that he had bought her the day before. He was going to miss her so much. He scratche under her chin, frowning. What a huge coincidence. Out of all the people who had lved at the apartments that burnt down, this little kitten had been Alan's. He felt nervous. Alan would be coming here. He quickly stood up and put Nala on the couch, and began cleaning up. When he was done, it was already five thirty. He sat down on the couch and waited. After ten minutes of uninterrupted silence, he turned on his TV and curled up with Nala. The longer he watched the cooking show the heavier his eyes got and he soon fell asleep.

He slept hard, but the knock at his door still woke him up. He looked at his clock. 6:17 pm. He rubbed his eyes and walked over to his door and opened it. In front of him stood the red haired boy that had been running through his mind all week.

"Austin?"

Alan was confused, and Austin was a little shocked that Alan remembered him. A light blush spread over his cheeks.

"Hi Alan. You're here for Na- for the kitten?"

Alan smiled and nodded.

"Um. C-come in if you want, I'll go g-get her."

Austin widened the door so Alan could come in, and he turned around and went to the living room. Nala was curled up on the couch wear Austin had been. The tall man felt bad for waking her up, but Alan was here and he probably missed his cat so Austin gently prodded her awake. She meowed and he picked her up and turned to Alan who was beside him in an instant.

"Sophie!"

Sophie?

The kitten meowed as Alan took her and cradled her. She purred and rubbed her head against his chest happily. Austin watched Alan and Sophie sadly. He didn't want either of them to go.

"I missed you so much, I thought I lost you! You got so big baby girl!"

Austin couldnt help but smile at how cute Alan was with his kitten. Alan flashed the taller boy a grin.

"Thanks for taking car of her!"

Austin blushed.

"It was n-no poblem."

The red haired boy's face pouted a bit.

"You never called me."

Austin's blush darkened.

"I'm s-sorry, I was g-going to call you t-today but you called me b-before ai could."

Alan perked up a little.

"Were you really?"

The older man nodded, chewing on his lower lip nervously.

The younger brightened up and grinned. "Oh yeah? Did you wanna hang out? I'm not doing anything tonight, we could go get dinner or do anything really! Only if you want to of course, unless your busy or don't want to."

Austin smiled. He was really hungry and as much as his head told him this could end badly for him, he couldn't deny the cute guy in front of him. "There is a n-nice diner with the best burgers not far from here. We could leave Na-Sophie here and g-go eat."

Alan nodded. "Okay! Awesome!"

Austin loved how happy Alan seemed to be at the idea of them hanging out. He grabbed a coat from the rack and followed Alan out the door, both boys nervous and excited at the thought of being with each other.
